Aim
The aim of this study was to investigate the biogeography of plant zonation in salt marshes on the Pacific coast of South America; to examine whether salt marsh plant zonation varies with latitude; and to explore the relative importance of climatic, tidal, edaphic and disturbance factors in explaining large‐scale variation in salt marsh plant community structure.Location
A 2,000‐km latitudinal gradient on the Pacific coast in Chile, with a climate shift from hyper‐arid at low to hyper‐humid at high latitudes.Methods
Plant zonation was quantified in field surveys of ten marshes. Climate, tidal regimes, edaphic factors and disturbances (tsunami and rainfall floods) were determined. We used multivariate analyses to explore their relative importance in explaining large‐scale variation in salt marsh plant community structure.Results
Across latitude, marshes were dominated by distinct plant communities in different climate regions, especially at the extreme dry and wet latitudes. Intertidal plant species zonation was present in hyper‐arid and semi‐arid climates, but not in arid, humid and hyper‐humid climates. Latitudinal variation in low‐marsh plant communities (regularly flooded at high tide) was largely a function of precipitation, while at high marshes (never flooded at high tide) latitudinal variation was explained with precipitation, temperature, tidal cycles, soil salinity and disturbances.Main conclusions
Salt marshes on the Pacific coast of South America belong to Dry Coast and Temperate biogeographic types. Salt marsh plant zonation varies across latitude, and is explained by climatic, tidal, edaphic and disturbance factors. Photosynthesis-irradiance (PI) curves are extensively used in field and laboratory research to evaluate the photon-use efficiency of plants. However, most existing models for PI curves focus on the relationship between the photosynthetic rate (Pn) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and do not take account of the influence of environmental factors on the curve. In the present study, we used a new non-competitive inhibited Michaelis-Menten model (NIMM) to predict the co-variation of Pn, PAR, and the relative pollution index (I). We then evaluated the model with published data and our own experimental data. The results indicate that the Pn of plants decreased with increasing I in the environment and, as predicted, were all fitted well by the NIMM model. Therefore, our model provides a robust basis to evaluate and understand the influence of environmental pollution on plant photosynthesis. 相似文献

The sequence (16,829 nt) of the complete mitochondrial genome of the
greater Indian rhinoceros, Rhinoceros unicornis, was determined. Like other
perissodactyls studied (horse and donkey) the rhinoceros demonstrates
length variation (heteroplasmy) associated with different numbers of
repetitive motifs in the control region. The 16,829-nt variety of the
molecule includes 36 identical control region motifs. The evolution of
individual peptide-coding genes was examined by comparison with a distantly
related perissodactyl, the horse, and the relationships among the orders
Carnivora, Perissodactyla, and Artiodactyla (+ Cetacea) were examined on
the basis of concatenated sequences of 12 mitochondrial peptide-coding
genes. The phylogenetic analyses grouped Carnivora, Perissodactyla, and
Artiodactyla (+ Cetacea) into a superordinal clade and within this clade a
sister group relationship was recognized between Carnivora and
Perissodactyla to the exclusion of Artiodactyla (+ Cetacea) . On the basis
of the molecular difference between the rhinoceros and the horse and by
applying as a reference to Artiodactyl/Cetacean divergence set at 60
million years ago (MYA), the evolutionary divergence between the families
Rhinocerotidae and Equidae was dated to approximately 50 MYA.

Abstract Extracts of hairpencils ffom male cotton bollworm moth were analyzed by capillary gas chromatography, acid methanolysis, and GC-MS. Ten components have been identified as: 14; OH, 14: Ac, 14: COOH, 211–16: OH, 16: OH, 16: Ac, 16: COOH, 18: OH, 18: Ac, and 18: COOH. Based on the statistics of titer of each chemical, the total amount of three saturated alcohols is over 75%. The amounts of the chemicals in the hairpencils are related to the age of males. There are no chemicals identified in the extracts from males less than 10 h after eclosion, then the quantity of compounds increased rapidly during 48 h after adult eclosion. Metabolic engineering of Saccharomyces cerevisiae for high-level production of aromatic chemicals has received increasing attention in recent years. Tyrosol production from glucose by S. cerevisiae is considered an environmentally sustainable and safe approach. However, the production of tyrosol and salidroside by engineered S. cerevisiae has been reported to be lower than 2 g/L to date. In this study, S. cerevisiae was engineered with a push-pull-restrain strategy to efficiently produce tyrosol and salidroside from glucose. The biosynthetic pathways of ethanol, phenylalanine, and tryptophan were restrained by disrupting PDC1, PHA2, and TRP3. Subsequently, tyrosol biosynthesis was enhanced with a metabolic pull strategy of introducing PcAAS and EcTyrAM53I/A354V. Moreover, a metabolic push strategy was implemented with the heterologous expression of phosphoketolase (Xfpk), and then erythrose 4-phosphate was synthesized simultaneously by two pathways, the Xfpk-based pathway and the pentose phosphate pathway, in S. cerevisiae. Furthermore, the heterologous expression of Xfpk alone in S. cerevisiae efficiently improved tyrosol production compared with the coexpression of Xfpk and phosphotransacetylase. Finally, the tyrosol yield increased by approximately 135-folds, compared with that of parent strain. The total amount of tyrosol and salidroside with glucose fed-batch fermentation was over 10 g/L and reached levels suitable for large-scale production. 相似文献

本文通过群集的绿脓杆菌在高盐、酸性培养基上生长试验,抗金黄色葡萄球菌的拮抗试验及冷休克试验,证明了绿脓杆菌群集生长效应。主要表现为群集的绿脓杆菌可以在含10~20%NaCl 的培养基上生长;pH4环境中也可生长。同样条件下,对照几乎均为阴性。分散成单个细胞分布的绿脓杆菌对冷反应敏感,群集则有抗冷休克作用。实验条件下,密集的金黄色葡萄球菌生长对分散的绿脓杆菌有拮抗作用,群集则可抵抗这种作用而生长。讨论中初步分析了群集生长效应的机理和对细菌种群在自然生境中的稳定作用。 相似文献
